White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout (The Dark Elements #1)

“Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.”

Jennifer L. Armentrout is definitely one awesome author and this book did not disappoint. I think her books are becoming my guilty pleasure. She surely knows how to keep her readers on edge during all her books and they keep craving for more.

When I read the synopsis, I already wanted to jump and started reading. Wardens* and demons in one story? It catches the attention of the reader and might well be an awesome action packed novel!!

(* Warden are gargoyles that look like humans except while they sleep or when they choose to shed their human skin as in during a fight. They protect mankind from demons.)

This novel follows the story of Layla, who’s half-warden and half-demon. Since a young age she was raised by the wardens but despite that they kind of despise her because of her demon side. She despises this side as well and the thing she hates more is that she craves human and wardens’ souls. One simple kiss and she won’t be able to stop herself from sucking someone’s soul.

This thing couldn’t let her to express her feeling toward Zayne. The only Warden who ever cared for her and always cared for her. They were raised together and were always next to each other’s as friends.

The main protagonist turned 17 at the beginning of the book and strange things kept on happening. All kinds of demons were after her and she didn’t know why until the sexy upper demon Roth came along and started helping her.

With the Wardens, Layla always felt unwanted and an outcast. But when she was with Roth she was able to be herself, felt secured and forget about her demon side. She could touch and kiss him without feeling guilty since he didn’t have any soul. She didn’t  where to belong and she was struggling all the way through.

The characters were funny, adorable, and fierce. Loved the chemistry between Layla, Roth and Zayne especially in the end. Layla, as a protagonist, didn’t bother me at all. She was this warrior and fierce character who knew what she wanted and didn’t accept to be put on the side. She was always up to every challenge that she was facing.   Zayne was this good friend to Layla and cared for and was there for her anytime she needed him. But on the other hand Roth was the one who made me go all crazy if you want. He was this arrogant and sarcastic boy who can make any girl falls in love with him. His comments with Layla were always on point:

“What are you looking for?” I asked, curious.
“A chicken,” he said, poking around the shelves. “Preferably a live chicken, but doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.”
I leaned closer to him. “Do I want to know why you want a live chicken right now?”
“I thought it would make a good traveling companion.”

The story was so well written that I couldn’t put it down. The plot was addicting and full of surprises. It was full of actions from the beginning and it didn’t made me get bored easily. In every single page something popped up and made want to continue reading eagerly. The ending left me speechless so I’m starting the next one right away!!
